FAQ - Professional Development

Q:  Where can I find the Application for Professional Development/Educational Funds and the Educational Leave Application forms, guidelines, and instructions?
A:  The Application for Professional Development/Educational Funds and the Educational Leave Application forms, guidelines, and instructions can be obtained by logging on to MyPima and accessing the College’s Intranet:
Home > College Forms > Human Resources Forms (located near the end of the list of forms)

They are also available on this site!

Q:  When do the applications need to be turned in?
A:  Submissions receive their first review at the July meeting of the Professional Development Committee but will be reviewed at each meeting until all funds are awarded.

Q:  Am I eligible to receive funding if I am a non-exempt employee occupying a classified exempt position in an ‘Acting’ capacity?
A:  No.

Q:  Am I eligible to receive funds during my Initial Hire Probation?
A:  No.  However, employees who have successfully completed their Initial Hire Probationary period, and who have transferred to a different position lateral or of a higher classification within the exempt bracket, continue to be eligible to receive funds during their Transfer Probationary period.

Q:  How are Professional Development/Educational Funds awarded?
A:  Funding requests are awarded with priority being given to Educational requests, followed by applications who have never received an award.  The priorities line up as follows:

1.     Educational Funds for first time recipients
2.     Educational Funds for prior recipients
3.     Professional Development Funds for first time recipients
4.     Professional Development Funds for prior recipients

Note:  a first time recipient is someone who has received neither an Educational nor Professional Development award in prior years.

Q:  What happens when there are more applicants for Professional Development/Educational Funds than there are funds to award?
A:  Funds are awarded by priority as indicated previously.  In the priority category where funding is exhausted, historically for applicants requesting Professional Development Funds who have received awards in prior years, the applicants are randomized and awarded.  Those who do not receive funding are placed on a waiting list in the event funding becomes available in the future.

Q:  Can I apply for Professional Development/Educational Funds throughout the year?
A:  Yes, however once funding is exhausted, approved awards are added to the end of the waiting list each month.

Q:  I have received an approved Educational Leave.  Can I continue to teach as adjunct faculty for the College?
A:  No.  Employees on an approved Educational Leave may not work for the College in any capacity during their leave.

Q:  Where can I find more information regarding the Professional Development and Educational Leave programs?
A:  Information for these programs may be found in the Exempt Personnel Policy Statement.  The policy manual is located in MyPima, on the College’s Intranet:
Home > Human Resources > Personnel Policy Statements
